About this project

Hey—we're Sean and Derek. This is Skew-T Explorer.

We built this for our fellow Navy METOC Officers and Aerographer's Mates: a way to actually see how a skew-T log-P sounding turns into the numbers you brief—CAPE, CIN, LCL, shear—instead of just trusting a table. Click any index and it shows you, on the diagram, where that number came from.

Built to teach, real enough to use

Every sounding here is a live, real radiosonde launch from the NWS upper-air network, and every index is computed from it—not a canned demo profile. The live data keeps the learning honest—but this is a teaching aid, full stop: for anything operational, go to your command's authoritative sources.

Data sources

Soundings: U.S. National Weather Service radiosonde launches, retrieved via the Iowa Environmental Mesonet (IEM) RAOB archive. Station METAR summaries on the map: NWS observations via api.weather.gov. Basemap: Natural Earth (public domain).

This site is intended for learning, not operations—do not use it for operational decisions; use it at your own risk. Not a forecast, warning, or substitute for official guidance—always go to the National Weather Service or your command's authoritative sources for that.

Real soundings, built for learning

This site draws live weather-balloon data as skew-T diagrams—and teaches you to read them.
